This talk will conduct a detailed examination of historical nation-state cyberattacks, starting with DPRK July 2009 disruptions through Stuxnet, Shamoon, Sony, NotPetya, OlympicDestroyer, Triton and other recent cases of disruption and destruction, to assess the strategic value of each attack for its perpetrators. The talk will try to discern the strategic intent of each actor in conducting a specific disruption and evaluate its degree of success in accomplishing those objectives. The speaker will then discuss the overall efficacy of cyberattacks in achieving strategic geopolitical objectives and what role they should serve in coercive nation state diplomacy in the future.
