“FALSE LEAKS”: A NETWORK LENS ON CYBER-ENABLED INFORMATION OPERATIONS
Camille François, Graphika
This talk presents our work mapping the social media dissemination networks around a series of “False Leaks” incidents in the recent years, where information obtained by cyber attacks (primarily phishing) are later disseminated, inorganically amplified and presented as “leaks”. It analyzes the different phases and characteristics of these dissemination campaigns across a few case studies, and presents conclusions for electoral integrity efforts as false leaks become an increasingly common technique. Case studies cover US incidents, French incidents, along with smaller efforts targeted at civil society and dissident communities.
